A host of comedic and entertainment royalty have gathered at Washington’s Kennedy Center as Adam Sandler received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Sandler on Sunday placed his hand on the award, a bronze bust of Mark Twain. The “Happy Gilmore" star speculated the award one day might be used to “bludgeon” him in his sleep. Sandler thanked his parents and siblings for what he called “that weird irrational confidence thing" he guesses he still has. The 56-year-old New Hampshire native first came to national attention on TV's “Saturday Night Live.” Sandler's “SNL” colleague Dana Carvey remarked before the ceremony, “Who has lasted this long and stayed this beloved?”

Donald Trump says in a social media post that he expects to be arrested Tuesday and he's calling on supporters to protest. A New York grand jury is investigating hush money payments to women who alleged sexual encounters with the former president. But there's no evidence that prosecutors have made any formal outreach to him. And a spokesperson and a lawyer for Trump says his Truth Social post was based on media reports rather than any actual update from, or communication with, prosecutors. The district attorney’s office declined to comment. Trump's post seems designed to preempt a formal announcement from prosecutors and to galvanize outrage from his base of supporters in advance of charges widely seen as coming soon.

A Massachusetts man accused of attacking a flight attendant and attempting to open the plane's emergency door on a cross-country flight has directed attention to passengers with mental health illnesses. One passenger who sat near Francisco Torres on the flight from Los Angeles to Boston says he didn’t exhibit any unusual behavior until he launched his attack. Most experts say there isn't a whole lot that airlines can or should be doing. They note that most people with mental illnesses are not violent, and barring them can pose a host of logistical and constitutional challenges.

Party leader Kevin McCarthy is determined to win over enough fellow Republicans. He has offered the conservative holdouts rule changes to give them more power to shape legislation — and to boot him from office. But it's still just “round one,” one of the holdouts says. So far, 11 roll call votes have failed to elect a speaker. The impasse has left the House unable to fully form and govern. Members voted to adjourn, returning Friday.

House Republicans plowed through the second day of the new Congress, with no clear off-ramp from their political chaos over electing leader Kevin McCarthy as the new speaker. A Wednesday night session was initially planned, but they instead gave up amid a shouting, crowded vote to adjourn. After lengthy closed-door meetings with conservative holdouts, McCarthy said more voting would not be productive, though he also said his meetings with holdouts showed progress. But no progress at all was evident, with 20 conservative holdouts still refusing to support him and leaving him far short of the 218 typically needed to win the gavel.
