It isn’t just Friday that’s black — Duke, a youthful German shepherd currently at Lowell Humane Society is a gorgeous guard dog with a pitch-black coat and an intriguing story: He walked all the way to New England from West Virginia.

He’s a sweetheart, and is seeking an individual or family with previous shepherd experience. He loves chasing tennis balls in a play yard, and of course going or long hikes. Volunteers report he would do well in a home with older kids who are dog savvy, and even dog-savvy cats. He will need a training deposit to help him improve his dog reactivity/impulse control issues. But he will repay you with canine gratitude — which is, of course, beyond words.
