SHIRLEY — A new gas station/convenience store slated for a vacant site on Front Street in the village business district where a Citgo station once stood has been an on-again, off-again proposition for a few years. Now, it’s on again as the Planning Board wraps up its site review process, second time around.

The property owner, Prit Patel, who also owns a laundromat next door and a variety store across the street, previously filed an application for a special permit that the board approved. But the time limit expired and he later submitted another application.

In the interim, the property went up for sale and Patel has reportedly said he might have a buyer lined up but needed permits in place to go ahead with a sale. In addition to the special permit, the Zoning Board of Appeals is also hearing his case for a variance, which is needed because the foundation for the building, already it place, is a couple of feet larger than the area’s zoning allows.

The Planning Board will hold a public hearing on the project proposal at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 28. The meeting will be held in the board’s second floor headquarters at the Town Offices.
