NORTH ANDOVER — A Townsend man suffered non-life-threatening injuries as he prepared a fireworks display for North Andover’s Fourth of July celebration over the weekend.

Will Shaw, a Groton firefighter and licensed pyrotechnician, was injured Sunday when some fireworks inadvertently ignited as he prepared them for the town’s event, according to Groton Fire Lt. James Crocker. The North Andover Fire Department administered aid to Shaw at the scene before he was transported to a local medical facility.

“Just a complete, freak accident as far as I understand it,” Crocker said of the incident.

According to Crocker, Shaw was flown to a Boston-area hospital for further treatment.

Later, Crocker started a GoFundMe to support Shaw, a man he called a “true hero,” through an expected “lengthy recovery and rehabilitation.” As of Wednesday, Shaw had undergone multiple surgeries to address arm and chest injuries and, according to Crocker, is expected to undergo “at least a few more.”

Crocker lauded Shaw’s character and asked those that were able to consider donating.

“(Shaw) is a true hero, just a standup example for anyone to look up to,” Crocker said. “The amount he’s done to help others, he’s just a great fireman and a great man that needs our help.

“(Shaw) works four jobs — and now he’s going to be out of work for quite a long time. So anything and everything we can do to help keep him afloat would be much appreciated,” Crocker added.
