TOWNSEND — A fatal crash that occurred Monday on Route 119 is under investigation, according to a statement issued by Police Chief James Sartell and Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.

According to the statement, Townsend Police responded to a report of a crash in the area of Route 119 and Route 13 around 5:35 p.m. Monday. On arrival, officers observed that an SUV and a sedan had been involved in a head-on collision and all seven occupants, including three from the sedan and four from the SUV, had sustained injuries.

All seven occupants were transported to an area hospital with “serious” injuries.

“The driver of the sedan has since died as a result of their injuries,” the joint statement read.

The identity of the driver has not been revealed.

According to officials, the preliminary investigation indicates that the sedan had been traveling westbound on Route 119, crossed the center line and collided with an SUV traveling in the opposite direction.

The crash remains under investigation by Townsend Police and the Massachusetts State Police’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, as well as the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
