Over 70? You can opt out of jury duty
Over 70? You can opt out of jury duty

Did you know that Massachusetts residents over the age of 70 can opt out of jury duty?

A 75-year-old client recently got a summons in the mail for jury duty. He was overwhelmed about trying to balance serving on a jury while caring for his elderly wife.

Amazingly, the mailed summons offered no phone number or mailing address to inquire about jury-duty obligations, just a website.  My client has no internet access, so I was called into service.

On the website, I discovered that one can opt out of jury service simply by being over the age of 70. Just be prepared to use the internet to make such an election.
