PEPPERELL – Each New Year’s Eve brings over 170 seniors to the Al Harris Senior Center to enjoy an afternoon of friendship, dinner, and dancing.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, staff at the center worked hard this year to be creative. They wanted to spread the joy of ringing in the New Year to the seniors who have been unable to visit their “home away from home.”

This year 80 seniors signed up for their New Year’s luncheon. As seniors drove up to receive their prepaid takeout Chinese food dinner and champagne glasses filled with chocolates, they were greeted by Custodian Al Harris and Activities director Cheryl Balkan.

Seniors enjoyed the decorated windows and holiday music which enhanced the spirit of the day. A special shout to the center’s chef Walter Colling and his volunteers who worked to package all the meals.

The center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Seniors can call ahead for curb side meals which are served Monday through Thursday. Classes and socials are available on Zoom.

The Albert Harris Center Pepperell Senior Center is also a service unit for the Salvation Army providing food and clothing vouchers, assistance with medication, and fuel assistance.

If you are in need or know someone that can use their help, don’t hesitate to call the center and ask for Becky. This service is for the entire town of Pepperell and for all ages. For more information contact the Albert Harris/ Pepperell Senior Center at 433-0326.
