LOWELL – If you commute on Route 2, expect lane closures between exits 56 and 60 in Arlington and Lexington beginning Monday.

The closures will take place on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the duration of four weeks, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

For the first three weeks, a left lane will be closed both eastbound and westbound between exits 56 and 57. For the last week, there will be alternating double-lane closures eastbound and westbound “to allow for the installation of conduit across the underside of the Route 60 bridge,” according to a MassDOT news release.

The closures will make way for construction by Coviello Electric and General Contracting Co. Inc. to improve highway lighting along Route 2. The project comes with an estimated price tag of $14.7 million, and is scheduled for completion in February 2022.

Signage, law enforcement details and message boards will guide traffic through the construction zone. MassDOT urges drivers to expect delays and reduce speed.
