TOWNSEND – Multiple honors were awarded to a local Veterans of Foreign Wars post for its contributions to the National and State VFW Auxiliaries.
The VFW Auxiliary to Townsend Post No. 6538 announced earlier this week that it received multiple citations and awards from auxiliaries throughout the country.
It was named Auxiliary of the Year and placed first in the Americanism, Hospital, Legislative, and Scholarships Programs in Membership Division 4, while also being named the runner-up in the Membership and Youth Activities Programs in the same division.
The local post is one of 14 auxiliaries in the Massachusetts Membership Division 4, with the announcement being made during the VFW’s Auxiliary Department of Massachusetts Council of Administration virtual meeting. This was a safer alternative to the usual annual department convention.
Betty Mae Tenney, president of the local auxiliary, said the post was “very proud” of the honors and its 98 members.
“With two second places and four first places in the programs in Membership Division 4 plus being named the Auxiliary of the Year in that division, we did the best of all the largest auxiliaries in the state,” she added.
Tenney was also announced as the chair of the Department Scholarships Program for the 2020-2021 year at the meeting while Lisa Jackson, treasurer of the town auxiliary, was named the junior vice president of the state department for the same year.
