The classic affogato — a frothy blend of piping hot espresso poured over creamy gelato — leaves little room for improvement. But there’s always alcohol.
Typically, this Italian invention often serves as a sweet and refreshing pick-me-up at the end of a meal. We decided to take the hot-and-cold treat and transform it into a frozen cocktail capable of melting away all memories of working from the AC-less inferno that is your home office.
For our Affogato Ubriaco (aka Drunken Affogato), we stuck to the basic ingredients of coffee and gelato, but then spiked them with dark rum and Kahlua, for optimal caffè taste. It’s best enjoyed while drawing up a full itinerary for an epic, affogato-filled excursion to Italy that you can’t actually take because of COVID.
1 oz. espresso or cold brew concentrate1 oz. dark rum½ oz. Kahlua2 scoops vanilla gelato
In a blender, blend espresso, rum, Kahlua and only 1 scoop of the vanilla gelato on high speed for 30-45 seconds. Pour into a coupe glass, top with the second scoop of vanilla gelato and serve.
