The United Way of North Central Massachusetts will hold its annual Day of Caring on Fridday, Sept. 20. Painting the windows at the Shirley Historical Society’s Museum is Mark Hardgraves Sr. from Bemis in Shirley in 2015.

On Friday, Sept. 20, hundreds of volunteers will join together to improve the North Central Massachusetts community at the 24th annual United Way Day of Caring.

Throughout the day, volunteer teams will lend a hand at area non-profit agencies, from clearing trails at local parks to repainting faded school stairways and helping stuff envelopes for fundraising campaigns.

The Day of Caring is the largest UWNCM volunteer event of the year and is an integral part of local community volunteerism. Last year, more than 580 volunteers completed 44 projects at 36 non-profit agencies, and an additional 2,000 students undertook projects at their schools.

The popular event enables non-profits to undertake tasks they may not otherwise have the resources to complete and attracts volunteers from throughout the region, many who return year after year.

Mike Fleek, assistant store manager at Hannaford in Clinton, has served on the Day of Caring Steering committee and coordinated a volunteer team from Hannaford for more than 12 years. Fleek says he sees the event as “a way to give back to the communities we serve and meet new people that share a common goal.”

As always, the day will kick off with a welcome breakfast at the Four Points Sheraton in Leominster at 7:30am and end with a barbeque held at the Polish American Citizens Club in Gardner at 1:30pm.
