GROTON — A well-known brother and sister combo from Pepperell claimed titles in the men’s and women’s divisions at the annual Groton Country Club Senior Club Championships held recently.
Both players recorded identical gross scores, 4-over par 76, for 18 holes.
Mike Hartnett and his sister, Cathy Walmsley were crowned Senior champs together.
The Senior Championships were a one-day, 18-hole event scored on a gross and net format.
Hartnett took the Men’s Open Division crown, while Mike Bouchard of Groton took the net championship with an adjusted score of 59.
Walmsley, representing Townsend Ridge CC, fired her outstanding round and won the title by 16 strokes. Jane Barrett of Groton CC grabbed net honors with a 70.
In the men’s Super Senior Division, Bob Anderson of Groton took the gross title with a fine round of 78. The Super Senior net champion was William Beresford with an adjusted score of 63.
Hartnett and Walmsley grew up playing at Groton Country Club. Cathy’s son Jimmy Walmsley, a former UMass Lowell golf standout, is the reigning overall club champion at both Groton CC and Townsend Ridge. Mike and Cathy’s late uncle, Frank Hartnett Jr., was also a former club champ at Groton.
GCC will be holding its Fourball Club Championship on July 14, and will follow up with the Junior and Open Club Championships in mid-August.
