Groton’s Ryleigh Richard crowned a Massachusetts baton champion

WHITMAN — Twelve-year-old Ryleigh Richard of Groton won the Pre-Teen Miss Majorette of Massachusetts Pageant at the annual National Baton Twirling Association competition held at Whitman Hanson High School.

The Miss Majorette competition is the qualifying event for the Miss Majorette of America competition hosted at Notre Dame University each year in July.

When competing for a Miss Majorette title, individuals participate in a three-part competition including modeling with an interview, an X-strut routine and a solo baton twirling routine. Ryleigh placed first in all three divisions.

A week later, Richard competed in the Massachusetts State Competition where she placed first in Advanced solo, Advanced X-Strut and Advanced Rhythmic Twirl. With these wins, Ryleigh will represent Massachusetts in the Grand National Championship division of Nationals.

Ryleigh is a member of The Academy Starz, a baton twirling team out of Agawam, where she is coached by National champion and 2005 Baton Twirling Hall of Fame member Nancy De Cosmo Locke and dance instructor Brittany Locke.
