GROTON — The Groton-Dunstable Athletic Booster Club has kicked off its annual spring fundraising drive with an informational card that has begun arriving in mailboxes throughout Groton and Dunstable.

This year supporters can also make secure, tax deductible on-line donations. Students will also be calling community members on Wednesday evenings between 6:30 and 8 p.m. for the next two weeks.

The Boosters rely on the generosity of donors to accomplish their mission of supporting the athletic programs of the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District. The all-volunteer group of parents and community members works to ensure that athletic teams in both the Middle and High Schools receive supplemental funding for programming and equipment needs beyond what is available in the District budget.

Jackie Maguire, Booster President, said “A large percentage of the athletic budget is funded by user fees. Despite these fees there is still a shortfall. The Boosters provide funding to help cover the shortfall.”

The annual campaign is the Boosters’ primary way of gathering additional community support from people who value the importance of athletics.

“We’re being asked to replace equipment that’s been in play since the high school was built. We also fund turf time, coach training, safety equipment and the list goes on,” added Maguire. “We value a close relationship with the coaches and work together with the school administration to do what we can. We follow the District’s protocols and keep an open door for communications.”

Since 2001, the G-D Boosters have funded over $225,000 in grant requests and over $135,000 in scholarship awards. Last year the Boosters contributed $10,000 to the expansion and updating of the weight room at the high school, benefitting every student and staff member.

In addition, the Boosters awarded $8,000 in scholarships, funded $4,000 for turf time for fall and spring teams, offset additional Ice hockey fees by $1,200, supported the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams’ winter game at the TD Garden, funded volleyball coach training and provided range privileges for the golf team. Through the years, the Boosters have been able to support just about every G-D team.
