SHIRLEY — Nasif Hayek is moving ahead with plans to open USA Auto Sales & Service at 212 Great Road. Selectmen approved a Class II license for the used car lot last week.

The board asked about business hours, delivery schedules and how many vehicles would be parked on the 3/4-acre lot. Hayek said it would house up to 30 or 40 cars for now but he aims to grow. He said he’d be back later to ask for that number to expand to 100.

Hours of operation would be “normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” he said, with deliveries during those times. But he’d make changes if asked. “Whatever you say …” Hayek said.

“It’s just that we’ve had trouble in the past” with another business nearby, Insurance Auto Auctions, Selectman Enrico Cappucci said, referencing neighbor’s complaints about noise, parking and other headaches caused by trailers dropping off wrecks after hours, and other activity.

Hayek assured the board his business would cause no such problems and does not deal in “junk” cars, although it would buy from auctions. He also said detailing and repairs would be done in a garage equipped to handle wastewater disposal properly.

Cappucci added a cautionary word. The property — which has hosted several businesses over the years, including a used-car lot and most recently a landscaping firm, has been vacant for awhile. The owner, Jeff Dusti, was arrested several weeks ago for firearms violations. If added charges follow and include illegal drug activity, the land leased to USA Auto could be subject to seizure by federal authorities, Cappucci said.
