Local police department will participate in this year’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The annual event offers a drop-off location for expired or unneeded medications, both prescription and over-the-counter. “Leftover pills can be used for the wrong reasons,” Townsend Police Chief Rick Bailey said in a press release. “Improper disposal can affect our water supply.”

Other stations available for dropoffs include Groton, Shirley and Pepperell. Ayer maintains a year-round drop-box in the department’s lobby.

In Townsend, 6,000 pills were disposed of in just four hours last year, according to the release. All forms of medications will be accepted including pills, liquids, needles, patches and inhalers. It is recommended that all identifying labels be removed beforehand.
