AYER — The Athletic Fields Subcommittee of the Ayer Shirley Regional School Committee will be holding public forums on a proposed upgrade to the Ayer Shirley Regional High School outdoor athletic facility on May 29 and May 31. Both forums will begin at 7 p.m.
The May 29 forum will be held at the Ayer Shirley Regional High School in the Commons area. The May 31 forum will be held at the Ayer Shirley Regional Middle School in the auditorium. The general public is invited. Other than taxpayer impact information, the information will be the same at each forum.
Members of the subcommittee, coaching staff, the athletic trainer, and student athletes will speak and answer questions. They will cover the current state of the facility, factors driving the need for an update, and the proposed plan. Additionally, estimated taxpayer impact and timeline for town meeting and ballot votes as well as design and construction will be covered.
The current athletic facility, built in 1964, is 53 years old with minimal updates over that time period. It no longer meets the demands of current sports programs. For example, it was never designed for soccer, which is now one of the two most participated in sports at the high school, along with track and field. The facility is also not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
