Police: SWAT called after Pepperell resident threatened with ax

AYER — A man allegedly threatened to harm a woman with an ax, along with threatening to hurt police officers Thursday evening, prompting a SWAT team to respond and placed him into custody.

Robert Smith, 54, of Pepperell, was arraigned on Friday in Ayer District Court. He was charged with assault and battery on a person over 60 causing injury, witness intimidation and malicious destruction of property over $250.

On Thursday at 7 p.m., Pepperell Police responded to a report of a woman asking for a man to be removed from her residence on Bacon Street. The man, Smith, is known to her.

Upon arrival, the woman told police that Smith inside had allegedly threatened to harm her with an ax, and that he had shoved her. When the woman threatened to call the police, Smith allegedly took her cell phone and broke it.

When police made entry into the residence, Smith allegedly said he would hurt the responding officers. As a result, a SWAT team was called to the residence, and Smith was placed under arrest.

No officers were injured.
