AYER — Ayer Shirley Regional High School (ASRHS) is spelling out serious comedy in their upcoming Spring Musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
In “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” an eclectic group of six adolescents, all played by adults, vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is one of the funniest musicals ever written.
Directed by JulieAnn Govang with Musical Direction by Jared Bloch, the cast features Auston Abrams, Julia Alo, Chassidy Boo, Carolyn Cooper, MacKenzie Drew, Kelly Flynn, Chris Govang, Katherine Krieger, Jared Magno, Nadia Nalesnik, Sarah Parrish, Vannah Pyatt, Deran Quinty, Erin Shine, Brandon So to, Shaunessy Straitiff, Brooke Venkitachalam and Cassidy Wenstrom… not to mention a variety of guest spellers each night including Postmaster/Selectman Gary Luca, Superintendent Dr. Mary Malone, State Representative Sheila Harrington, local businessmen, a few ASRHS teachers… and maybe a few selected from the Audience!
“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”runs May 5 at 7 p.m.; May 6 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., in the ASRHS Auditorium 141 Washington Street in Ayer.
