The Groton Woman’s Club welcomed Cherylann Gengel as guest speaker to its October luncheon. Cheryl is co-founder of the Be Like Brit Foundation, which has constructed an orphanage in Haiti, in memory of her daughter, Britney.

Britney was a student at Lynn University, and went to Haiti on a mission trip with others from the university. Britney was one of the students killed in the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010.

Shortly after her arrival in Haiti, Britney sent her mother a message expressing her admiration for the Haitian people, the poorest of the poor, and her desire to move to Haiti and build an orphanage herself.

With the funds raised from the Be Like Brit Foundation, the Gengels have done just that, by building and operating an orphanage for 33 boys and 33 girls.

Their dedication is impressive, as currently they are sending supplies and building homes for those in the community who have lost everything following the effects of Hurricane Matthew.
