Pool A, 8 innings
South Berkshire 6, Ayer Shirley 4
WESTMINSTER — Ayer Shirley spotted defending state champion South Berkshire four runs in the top of the first inning, but it refused to go down quietly during Sunday afternoon’s U10 state tournament pool play game in Westminster.
The Panthers tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning, as John Iannacone laced a 2-run double to the gap in right-center, which scored Tyler Crawford (double, run) and Ryan Marchand (2 for 3,walk,run).
Neither team managed to breakthrough in the six inning regulation allotment, but in the eighth, South Berkshire knocked home a pair of runs to hold off Ayer Shirley, 6-4.
The Panthers left the bases loaded in the seventh inning.
South Berkshire appeared to score the go-ahead run in the seventh, but after a lengthy discussion, it was found to have batted out of order, thus resulting in the final out of the inning, as the run was wiped off the board.
James Gaunlett (2B, 2 RBI) and Rajit Talluri (single) and James Churchill (single), who also had a standout day defensively, all had a strong day at the plate.
Pool C: Northampton 8, Pepperell 1
