I am writing in response to the article “A special ‘welcome home’Vietnam vets” published April 29, 2016. It is astonishing for a Military Installation Commander to not know the difference between a negotiated peace settlement and a military defeat. I am sure the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon would be pleased to know that an active duty Lt. Col. publicly rewrote history by stating “the US lost the war”. The Vietnam War was not fought solely by the U.S. and North Vietnam. LTC Woodward apparently doesn’t realize that there were other countries involved in combating the North Vietnamese. How insulted the Vietnam Veterans in attendence must have felt to be told by LTC Woodward that they fought in “the only war the country ever lost”. LTC Woodward, you owe all Vietnam Veterans an apology. I would suggest that the next time you are in Washington D.C. you visit the Vietnam Memorial, face the memorial, render the hand salute and apologize to all who are memorialized there.
