AYER — An unidentified driver died at a local hospital following a single-vehicle crash on Washington Street in Ayer late Saturday night, according to a spokeswoman for Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.

Ayer police did not immediately comment on the crash, but Elizabeth Vlock, a spokeswoman for Ryan, said emergency crews were called to a single-vehicle crash about 11:20 p.m. The driver, whom authorities did not identify, was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, according to Vlock. Fire Department radio broadcasts indicated the driver was taken to Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer.

Police and Fire Department radio broadcasts indicated that a woman in her 60s was trapped inside the vehicle until firefighters were able to free her and perform CPR at the scene. Ayer police referred questions about the crash to Lt. Brian Gill, who was not available Sunday night.
