I am pleased to announce that I am seeking re-election to the Shirley Board of Selectmen. There are numerous reasons: The first and most important is that Shirley’s fiscal picture is in the best shape it has been in the last 20 years. We are proposing a budget for annual Town Meeting that is balanced and it will not require taking any money from the stabilization fund. We are funding all departments without making cuts in services. We are continuing the process of increasing various budgets to reflect the actual needs. This year we focused on building and equipment maintenance, an area of the budget cut to the bare bones in the past.
Since I have become a selectman we have worked to eliminate the structural deficit, increase our level of services. We have added a police officer, DPW worker and offer a much improved ambulance service. We have turned back on all streetlights and increased the amount of street lights. We have started to actually maintain our buildings and equipment.
We have established a Capital Stabilization fund that will allow the town to set aside enough money to purchase new equipment on a regular basis.
We have worked to increase the amount of money available by working with the Water District to install a solar array on their property and on underutilized town-owned property. The board has entered into an energy aggregation agreement that will significantly reduce electrical costs at your house.
Because of the hard work done last fiscal year we were able to return to the taxpayers $130,000, which was used to reduce our tax rate for the first time in a very long time.
I would like to continue keeping Shirley on the path of fiscal stability. I ask that you vote for me on May 3.
