FITCHBURG — The fifth annual military night varsity ice hockey tribute to all past, former and present military will be played on January 30 at 4 p.m. at the Wallace Civic Center at Fitchburg State University.

This annual matchup between Groton-Dunstable and North Middlesex pays special tribute to Marine Corps. Sgt. William. J. Woitowicz, a 2009 G-D graduate, who was killed in action during the war in Afghanistan and was awarded the silverstar.

Both varsity hockey teams invite all those who have served or currently serving our armed forces to attend.

Proceeds from a 50-50 raffle and bake sale will go towards the Sgt. Woitowicz’s Memorial Fund.

“It is an honor to play in this game,” said G-D captain Eric Niemoller.

“It is a competitive matchup vs. North Middlesex and yet we stand together to honor Sgt. Woitowicz, a young man like us — at the beginning when we present the colors together and again at the end for a photograph for posterity.”

North Middlesex and Groton-Dunstable are happy to represent their respective communities’ veterans and current service members.

“We envision playing this annual game in honor of our military for decades to come,” said North Middlesex head coach Mike McCarthy.

“Both communities have large populations of military families and several ice hockey alumni are serving currently or are soon to be commissioned.”
