AYER — An Ayer family was left homeless Sunday night when a fire struck their mobile home on Groton School Road while they were away, according to firefighters.

Capt. Tim Johnston said crews were called to 11 Groton School Road, Lot 4, about 4:30 p.m., when neighbors reported the fire and said the family that lives in the trailer wasn’t home.

There were no reported injuries.

Johnston said crews arrived to find smoke showing from the trailer, and that flames eventually vented through a window and got into a wooden roof the family had built over the trailer.

Crews brought the fire under control within about 30 minutes, but the trailer appeared to be a total loss, according to Johnston.

He said the residents were displaced, but that they made arrangements to stay with relatives Sunday night.

The cause remains under investigation.

Firefighters from Lunenburg, Shirley, Groton and Devens assisted Ayer at the scene, and firefighters from Littleton covered Ayer stations while the fire scene was active.
