On Tuesday August 18, 2015 at approx. 1:30 p.m. the Ayer Dispatch Center received a 911 call from the Ayer Parks Department lifeguards, reporting an unresponsive person at the Sandy Pond public beach and that CPR was in progress.

The Ayer Fire / EMS and Police Departments were dispatched to the scene and learned that the victim (a 42-year-old female) was found under the water and extricated by the lifeguards, where they started CPR as a lifesaving measure.

The responding EMS took over care upon their arrival.

The victim was taken to the Nashoba Valley Medical Center and subsequently transported to the UMass University Medical Center in Worcester where she later died.

The beach was closed for the remainder of the day, and will remain closed for Wednesday August 19, 2015. The Ayer Parks Department has indicated a potential reopening date of Thursday, Aug. 20.

Ayer Police Detective Kellie Barhight is investigating the incident, in coordination with Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Middlesex DA’s Office.
