Voters of Shirley,
A petition has been presented to the Board of Selectmen to ask that the town be able to enact a recall petition for any elected official in Shirley, for any reason. That is the wording in Section 1 — any elected official for any reason.
I urge the voters of Shirley to vote against this motion at the STM on September 12 at 9 a.m.
While the ability to recall an elected official for just cause may be desirable, there needs to be bounds on what is just cause.
As written, this document could result in initiation of a recall petition for a Library Trustee because a group of citizens don’t like the books in the Hazen Memorial Library. It could result in a recall petition for any elected Shirley member of the ASRSD committee, for any reason. Any elected official for any reason.
This recall procedure will cause elected officials to constantly look over their shoulders to make sure they are not upsetting one constituency or another. While some may say that this is accountability, I believe that it is government by intimidation.
This is wrong, and this motion has to be voted down.
