Cruise Night at the Townsend VFW Fridays
For the next eight weeks (every Friday in July and August), the VFW will be hosting “Cruise Night at the V” from 6-9 p.m. There will be entertainment, food, raffles and more.
This is open to all classic, antique and one-of-a-kind hot rods. Motorcycles and trucks also welcome to participate.
On Saturday nights, we will be starting “Saturday Evening Chicken BBQ.” It is our hope to utilize the pond and all that nature has to offer, to make this an enjoyable family experience within the community.

Birding at Fruitlands: Free. 6:30-9:30 a.m., 102 Prospect Hill Road, Harvard. This guided birding walk covers about two miles on maintained trails passing through meadows and wooded glens. Meet in the upper parking lot for this early morning exploration.
WEDNESDAY, AUG. 12
Pipeline meeting, Lunenburg: 7 p.m., Lunenburg High School. One in a series of “public scoping meetings” being held by the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission as it prepares its environmental impact statement on the Northeast Energy Direct Project, the proposed natural-gas pipeline that would cross through the region. Members of the public can file their comments via the FERC website or mail them to Secretary Kimberly Bose at 888 First Street NE, Room 1A in Washington, D.C.
THURSDAY, AUG. 13
Townsend Military band concert and lawn party: 7-9:30 p.m., concert begins at 7:30 p.m., weather-permitting. Concerts postponed due to inclement weather, will be rescheduled to Aug. 20 and, if necessary, Aug. 27.
SATURDAY, AUG. 22
6th annual Shirley Fire Ride: 8 Leominster Road, Shirley. Registration 9:30 a.m. Ride starts at 11 a.m., with a police escort, at the fire station and ends at the American Legion, 4 Church St. Rain date: Aug. 23. Music, food and fun for all. Cookout at 2 p.m. Cost: $25 for singles, $30 for doubles. Food only is $5. Proceeds to benefit Shirley Fire Department Hose Co. #1, which uses funds for local school scholarships, athletic programs, holiday family needs and training. A percentage of funds raised will benefit Downs Syndrome research.
