Lifelong Learning

Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, Groton Public Library will again be offering Lifelong Learning courses starting in September.

With topics ranging from “Mortal Matters” to “Exploring Groton” to TED Talks, these courses offer a vast array of subjects to delve into and examine.

Registration for fall 2015 has begun and can be done through our website at www.gpl.org or by calling the library at 978-448-1167. Please note that class size is limited to 15, so sign up soon!

Adult Programs:

“Summer of Heroes” 2015 Adult Summer Reading Program for ages 18 and Up! Read books! Have fun! Earn prizes! Honor real heroes! Try the Read Across the U.S.A. Superhero Challenge! Sign-up online or at the Library and pick up your starter packet. Sponsored by the GPL Endowment Trust.

Knitting Group: Thurs., Aug.. 13 and Aug.. 20, 2-3:30 p.m. These are the weekly meetings of the knitting group. Self-directed work on your own knitting projects. Handcrafts are also welcome.

Mystery Book Group: Thurs., Aug. 20, 7-8:30 p.m. This month’s selection is The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith, a.k.a. J.K. Rowling. Participation in the Mystery Book Group is free and open to all interested adults (co-ed). No registration is necessary.

Young Adult Programs:

Sign up today for the Escape the Ordinary Summer Reading Program for Grades 6-12. There is still plenty of time to read and earn exciting prizes! All summer reading prizes and events are sponsored by the Groton Public Library Endowment Trust.

Pizza & a Movie, Insurgent: Wed., Aug. 12, 6-8 p.m. Grades 6-12. The struggle continues for Beatrice Prior in this sequel to Divergent. Movie MPAA Rated PG-13. Pizza and refreshments served. Please sign up!*

Jello Printmaking: Thurs., Aug. 13, 7-8:30 p.m. Grades 5-12. Using found objects, cut paper, acrylic paint, stencils and gelatin you will create colorful, multi-layered prints. Artist Suzanne Hauer will be here to teach students. Everyone will go home with a recipe to make more. Registration is limited, so please sign up!*

Hack Your Notebook: Wed., Aug. 19, 7-8:30 p. m. Grades 6-12. Learn paper circuitry to light up your notebook, artwork or other projects. All supplies will be provided, and are yours to keep. Space is limited to 10 participants, so please sign up!*

Robotics Club: Thurs., Aug. 20, 7-8:3 p.m. Grades 6-12. We will use LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 kits to build and program simple robots. New members always welcome. Please sign up!*

Children’s Programs:

Mother-Daughter Spa Event: Tues., Aug. 11, 3-4 p.m. Get ready to be PAMPERED! Moms and daughters, ages 8-12, will get to attend this super fun and relaxing spa party. (Please let the library know of any allergies before signing up). Online registration begins one week before the program and preference is given to Groton residents.*

Drop-in Game Night: Thurs., Aug. 13 and Aug. 20, 6-8:30 p.m., Grades K-5. Come play board games with friends and family!

Meet Buzz Lightyear!! Friday, Aug. 14, 10:30-11 a.m. Children are invited to participate in an engaging story time and related activities with Buzz Lightyear. All participants will have an opportunity to meet Buzz, have their photo taken, and receive a goody bag filled with materials while supplies last. For all ages.

Steve Blunt and Marty Kelley: Tues., Aug. 18, 10:30-11:15 a.m. Two good friends team up for a unique library show with lots of music and laughs. For all ages. Online registration begins one week in advance with preference given to Groton residents.*

Batman’s Secret Tools: Weds., Aug. 19, Session 1: 2-3 p.m. or Session 2: 3-4 p.m. Participants will build secret bat tools that Bruce Wayne could use even when he is not in his Batman suit. Children ages 8-12. Online registration begins one week before the program and preference is given to Groton residents. Please sign-up for one session only.*

Superhero Training with Jungle Jim: Friday, Aug. 21, 10:30-11:15 a.m. Jungle Jim challenges the audience to see if they have what it takes to be a hero: turning kids into superheroes. For ages 3-10. Online registration begins one week before the program and preference is given to Groton residents.*
