SHIRLEY — The Hazen Memorial Library in Shirley is excited to announce its 2015 Summer Reading Programs: “Every Hero Has a Story!” for children ages birth to grade 5, “Unmask!” for grades six through 12, and “Escape the Ordinary” for adults.

Everyone is invited to join the Friends of the HML for an afternoon of fun at the Summer Reading Kick-off Barbecue on June 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Register for Summer Reading, and enjoy the event with raffles, Zumba, silent auctions, a Super Hero Obstacle Course, music, games and the best barbecue in town. The menu includes barbecued pulled pork sandwiches, potato salad, hot dogs and drinks. Prices are $7 for an adult meal, $4 for kids, and $2 for a hot dog. Drinks and desserts will be priced separately.

All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Hazen Memorial Library, a major sponsor of our Summer Reading Program.

On June 18 at 6:30 p.m.,, we will have a Super Magic Show by Scott Jameson. No sign up is necessary, but attendance will be limited to the size of the room. This program is sponsored by a grant from the Shirley Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

This summer we will celebrate all types of heroes; community, animals, superheroes and ordinary people who are extraordinary. There will be weekly programs for children, preschool through young-adult. Activities will include costume creations, making superhero capes, group games, physical challenges, LEGOs, creative projects, science and engineering challenges, and more.

Other programs will include a magician, a hero training course and ice cream and prizes for all.

Teens can “Unmask” their hidden talents this summer with weekly teen activities including art, technology, volunteerism, book clubs, contests and prizes.

School-assigned summer reading required books are available at the library.

Adults are encouraged to register for the “Escape the Ordinary” adult reading program, with weekly prize drawings, and grand prizes awarded at the finale event on Aug. 6.

All programs are free of charge.
