Charles O. Thompson Scholar

Elizabeth Rooney of Harvard, a first-year student majoring in biomedical engineering, has been named a Charles O. Thompson Scholar for the 2014-15 academic year. Named in honor of the first president of WPI, this honor recognizes outstanding performance by first-year students. To be eligible for membership, students must achieve all A’s and B’s (with a minimum of six A’s) in their academic subjects during their first three terms at WPI.

Groton native Elizabeth M. Hackney received the German Award from the Foreign Languages Department. The departmental awards are given to the top students in each of Stonehill’s academic departments. Hackney, a Psychology & Interdisciplinary Studies major, is a member of the Class of 2015.

Membership in this prestigious national freshman honor society celebrates outstanding academic performance after the completion of one full semester of college work. Phi Eta Sigma emphasizes those personal qualities that are essential to a successful happy life.

Pomfret School

Thomas Wickham of Groton was among the 21 students who earned either summa, maxima, magna, or cum laude status in the 2015 National Latin Exam. More than 153,000 Latin scholars from throughout the U.S. and around the world took the exam in early March. Thomas, a member of the Pomfret class of 2017, earned Magna Cum Laude status for his performance in the Latin 2 exam.
