PEPPERELL — “The roof’s gone.”
Susan Buckley said the words no one wants to hear after she heard a noise Monday at about 3:15 p.m. The roof of the barn across the street had collapsed.
“There’s nobody in there,” she said. The house at 6 Hotel Place has been unoccupied for several years.
The barn is attached to the house, which according to assessor’s records dates from about 1840.
“So far it’s just the barn,” Buckley said, but “it looks like the whole building is compromised.”
As she was speaking, she looked out her window again. “That part of the chimney came down,” she said.
The house has been for sale for several years, she said. The house could be the original house on the street, Buckley said.
