Striking to Victory: Groton girl is headed to Futsal Nationals

Submitted report

HANOVER — Nashua World Cup Team Mayhem took the regional futsal title over Martin Luther King weekend for the Girls U-11 division, advancing to the National Futsal Tournament in Kansas City Feb. 13-16.

Team play led to strong passing and goals from all players throughout the weekend, including Groton resident, Jackie Gervais.

The Starland Sports Complex in Hanover hosted the Northeast Regionals with over 170 teams participating.

Futsal is an indoor version of soccer where the players use a smaller, less bouncy ball and is played on a basketball court instead of turf or grass.

In the finals, Team Mayhem, coached by Brian Porcelli and Kristen Ramalho, defeated the Kings FC from Framingham in penalty kicks to win the tourney. The girls played from behind most of the game with goals coming from Ally Prentice and Natalie Coutu in the first half.

Trailing 4-2 in the final three minutes of the game, Natalie Coutu scored on a pass from the corner by Kiara Porcelli, giving the team the spark needed for Delaney Ramalho to tie it up with over a minute to go. Goalie Katie Carey stood strong throughout the weekend and during the moments of penalty kicks.
