DEVENS — The Devens Enterprise Commission will hear a presentation tonight by Dr. Michael Krupa on construction of a 100-bed hospital to serve people with mental illness.
According to a source close to Dr. Krupa, the hospital would be build on Patton Road not far from Red Tail Golf Club.
The need for such a facility is considered great due to the closing of mental health treatment centers throughout the state, including the one located at Burbank Hospital in Fitchburg.
Currently, there are no in-patient psych hospitals from Gardner to Lowell and south to Worcester. A new mental health center opened at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer is for geriatric patients only and a small unit at Emerson Hospital in Concord does not accept Medicaid.
The DEC meeting with Dr. Krupa is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at 33 Andrews Parkway in Devens. The meeting is open to the public.
