MARLBORO — North Middlesex boasted four athletes in the top 25, the top two of whom cracked the top five at Ghlioni Park in Marlboro Saturday. Senior Chris Skelly was leading the race for a good portion, but a wrong turn shaved some time off of his finish, and contributed to a somewhat disappointing third-place finish overall (16:55).

“I took a wrong turn, and it happens to the best of us,” Skelly said. “I accidentally went on the wrong side of the rope, and I didn’t want to get disqualified, so I turned around a little bit. I had a bit of a lead at the time, and it’s hard to maintain a good mentality when that happens.”Patriot junior Chris Alfond looks to be a rising star in the team’s ranks, as he finished fifth (17:14) in a very top-heavy Mid-Wach B field. Mike Spooner (17:43) and Gavin Thomas (18:26) each had strong showings, finishing 12th and 22nd respectively, while Justin Kauppi rounded out the scoring, finishing 46th (20:52). “Alfond and Spooner have really come along,” North Middlesex head coach Suzanne Williams said.

Alfond looked really strong today and has been key for scoring points for us in the dual meets.
