Shirley — A 24-year-old man with burns to his face and body was transported to Nashoba Valley Medical Center by ambulance in the early morning hours on Sunday.
The victim allegedly placed newspapers and an accelerant on a campfire or pit fire at a residence on Tolman Avenue.
“There was a flashback that caused the burns,” said Police Chief Thomas J. Goulden.
A medical emergency call came in at 12:53 a.m. on Sunday. Responders called for a medical helicopter, but the service was grounded because of the weather, according to the police log entry on the event.
The incident appeared accidental, Goulden said.
By Thursday, more information came to the attention of police, prompting Goulden to say, “There could be more to this than pure accidental,” he said.
A sergeant will investigate further on Friday.
No one at the Fire Department was available for comment on Thursday afternoon.
The case remained under investigation.
