The Shirley Council on Aging asks: Are you ready to make a difference?

Do you have a car and a couple of hours to spare? Do you wish to give back to your community?

If your answer is YES, the Shirley Council on Aging would like to talk to you about two volunteer programs that are vital to our seniors.

1: Volunteers needed to deliver Meals-on-Wheels.

If you have a driver’s license, a car and a desire to help people give us a call!

The Shirley Council on Aging is looking for a friendly, dedicated person to deliver meals to shut-ins. Currently, we are looking for someone to fill the Wednesday OR Friday slot or someone willing to be a back-up driver. Meals are picked up at the Senior Center and are delivered between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. You would receive a small stipend for mileage and a great sense of appreciation for your effort.

If this kind of “feel good” activity interests you, contact us at 978-425-1390.

2: Would you like to be volunteer angel?

We are looking for a pool of volunteers to help us continue to provide reliable and friendly escort service to seniors who are unable to drive and need transportation to medical appointments.

The angels are part of our “Angels on Wheels” Program and they are called when the MART van schedule is full or when an appointment is outside the van’s geographical area. Most trips are to Emerson in Concord, and occasionally to Fitchburg/Leominster when scheduling conflicts occur with the MART van.

Sometimes appointments are in Worcester or even Boston. It is always your decision whether you are available or want to accept a particular ride destination. Becoming an angel does not commit you to any particular schedule or destination — it is a ride by ride decision.

Some angels prefer to only do local appointments and that’s okay. Others like to drive to Boston/Worcester. You decide. Volunteers receive a small mileage stipend.

Interested? Call us at 978-425-1390. We are in serious need of additional drivers this time of year.
