West Nile and Eastern Equine virus has begun to show up intermittently in mosquitoes statewide.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus are rare but serious diseases caused by a virus transmitted through the bite of a mosquito.

Although the risk level in the Devens area is low and no human cases have been reported, residents are still urged to take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and long pants and using repellents between dusk and dawn, eliminating standing water on your property, repairing screens and using mosquito netting on baby carriages and playpens.

The Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project (CMMCP) continues to conduct investigations throughout Devens and implement control measures in targeted areas. CMMCP does not perform routine, area-wide spraying. Information on all products used by CMMCP can be found at

Residents and businesses can request spraying of their property for adult mosquitoes by completing a simple request form on-line at: or by calling (508) 393-3055.

If CMMCP receives a request for spraying, they will investigate. If their investigations confirm that a sufficient number of mosquitoes are in the requested area to warrant an application, they will conduct a targeted application.

Residents and businesses can also request that their property be excluded from any targeted spraying by following the online instructions at: or by calling 508-393-3055.
