SHIRLEY — The Shirley Center Farmers Market on Shirley’s historic Center Town Common, 3 Parker Road, welcomes families every Thursday from 4 p.m. to dusk through Sept. 25 for some good, old-fashioned fun and nutritious food.
Vendors at the SCFM include Shuttuck Farm, Dragonfly Farms, Glas Logan Farm (fresh meats), Little Acre Farms (goat’s milk products), Nissitissett Apiaries, Hapberly Farms (cut flowers), Grovehouse Bakery (baked goods, beverages, cheeses), Muddy Water Coffee, Bagel Alley, Zach Harrison (soaps), Happiness is Handmade (tie-dyed clothes), the Shirley Historical Society (souvenirs), Next Step Living (no-cost energy assessments), and James Normington of Edward Jones (financial planning.)
Upcoming free children’s activities include Aug. 14: making fairy houses from nature; Aug. 21: making paper hats from recycled materials; Aug. 28: still life painting and drawing on cardboard. Weekly, kids are also welcome to create their own puppet shows, and, for a small fee, experience riding on a horse from Rivers Edge Farm.
Free live music is being provided by Elizabeth Lorrey & The Rafters on Aug. 14, Ashbrook Haynes on Aug. 21 and Greg Sullivan on Aug. 28.
The SCFM’s unique location is in the historical center of Shirley, with its 1773 Meeting House and 1847 Center Town Hall, a gable-front Greek Revival building with four Doric-order columns. Both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places, and proceeds from SCFM vendor fees go toward both the farmer’s market and the preservation of the Center Town Hall building.
The SCFM’s promotional partner is The Bull Run Restaurant, “Serving the tired, thirsty traveller since 1740.”
