DEVENS — Shriver Job Corps is looking for additional students after a hike in federal funding has increased the student cap from 242 to 300.
The boost from the U.S. Department of Labor brings the capacity back up to what Shriver offered before funding cuts hit in 2013, said Christine Bradshaw, director of outreach and admissions.
“Recently, the federal government worked with the Job Corps programs and federal Job Corps around the country got increased funding and increased beds, so as to service more students,” she said. “Basically, they brought us back to where we were before.”
The Devens-based Shriver Job Corps is one of 125 in the country funded through the Department of Labor. The centers offer vocational training and allow students to complete GED certification.
Students can live on the campus off Jackson Road, receiving stipends each week that help them transition into a work environment.
For Shriver, the funding brings back the Security and Protective Services program, which trains students in topics such as patrol and crime scenes. The class has 20 open spots.
The center’s carpentry class will double in size from 20 to 40 students.
“It’s great news for the young people of the community because we have open available space in our vocational training program,” Bradshaw said.
Corey Gagnon, the finance and administration director for Shriver Job Corps, said in an email that the carpentry and security trades programs will receive two new instructors.
He said he could not give out the exact amount of funding due to company policies.
Each Job Corps center’s contract is competitively procured, and the budget information in each individual contract is private, he said.
Bradshaw said the center is actively recruiting females, carpentry and security students, and those who would like to finish their high school equivalency testing.
“We welcome all applicants for any of our vocations, but we’re actively recruiting for those four types of students,” she said.
