TOWNSEND — Townsend Fire-EMS Relief Association will be holding its 4th annual golf outing in honor of two fallen firefighters, Capt. William Hamilton and Lt. Donald Amadon, who lost their lives to Pancreatic and Colon cancer.
“It’s about brotherhood, it’s the biggest fundraiser of the year to commemorate the firefighters that are not forgotten,” said co-Chairman Brett King.
Last year, the outing attracted approximately 200 people and helped raised $13,000 for the Colon and Pancreatic Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital.
“As Lt. Bill Elliott always says, we are going to raise money until Mass General says we don’t need your money anymore because cancer is cured ” said co-Chair Jessica Fellows.
In 2011, firefighters Brett King and Duane Creighton decided they wanted to do something to remember the two deceased firefighters and started a golf tournament. They chose to donate to Massachusetts General Hospital because that was where the two fallen firefighters were treated.
“It struck the guys really hard, they did not want to just accept it, they wanted to do something,” said Fellows.
Four years later, 20 to 40 active and retired members of the Townsend Fire-EMS Relief Association, including family members of the fallen brothers, come out to help.
Local residents and businesses join in to golf and raise money. Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston sent out a team of four doctors last year to play in the tournament.
This year there is a new challenge on the course. Public safety officials are encouraged to form teams and play for their chance to win a plaque with their team’s name, something Fellows called, “bragging rights.”
The golf committee’s goal is to raise $20,000 this year.
The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Townsend Ridge Country Club. Opening ceremony will begin around noon followed by a barbecue reception after the tournament. Those interested in signing up or sponsoring the event can visit www.tfdemsgolf.com for information.
