GROTON — Seven years ago, members of the Silver Scorpions patrol from Boy Scout Troop 1, Groton — Ben Huber, Bennett Marston, Chris Marsh, Danny Horrigan and Chris Huber — began their Boy Scout journey together.
Now each young man has obtained the rank of Eagle Scout, Scouting’s highest honor. Their various Eagle Scout projects advanced the efforts of the Hazel Grove Agricultural Association, Parks Commission, Trails Committee, Sargisson Beach Committee and Old Burying Ground Commission.
They have attended summer camp at Camp Wanocksett in Dublin, N.H., and enjoyed numerous camping, hiking and whitewater rafting trips through the years. Some of their high adventure trips included hiking 70 miles at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, sailing in the Florida Keys through the Boy Scout Sea Base Camp and kayaking and camping on Penobscott Bay, Maine.
In the town of Groton, they have volunteered at food drives, set up the Avenue of Flags in West Groton, worked the Groton Road Race water stop, helped senior citizens with yard work and assisted with several Eagle projects.
The next steps for these recent high school graduates are Cornell University (Huber and Huber), Rochester Institute of Technology (Horrigan), Northeastern University (Marsh) and the United States Naval Academy (Marston).
