FITCHBURG — Ayer Shirley led 42-41 with under a minute remaining in Monday’s Monty Tech Summer Basketball league game against Narragansett, but a turnover led to a pair of Warrior baskets, as it fell 45-42.
Jonathan Durban led the Panther offense with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Mike Davis also had a solid outing for the Panthers with 10 points.
The Panthers started the game on a 7-2 run behind solid passing from Peter Fredericks and finishes at the rim by Durban. John Gendron helped extend Ayer Shirley’s lead out to 11-6 midway through the first half, but Narragansett came roaring back with a pair of quick baskets to cut the lead to three points with nine minutes remaining in the half.
Ayer Shirley closed the half on a 6-2 run with baskets from Durban and Fredericks. The Panthers led 19-14 at the half.
Ayer Shirley led by as much as nine points in the second half following an icy three-pointer from Luther Salmon, but Narragansett refused to back down. The Warrior defense strung together a couple of stops and used a lay-up and three-pointer to tie the game at 41-41.
The Panthers fall to 7-3 at the time of publication in summer league play. Ayer Shirley returns to action Monday night at 8 p.m., when it faces South Lancaster Academy.
