PEPPERELL — Town Administrator John Moak will be retiring later this year, he said Tuesday.

Moak, who has been considering retirement for several months, said he sent a letter to the Board of Selectmen this week listing July 31 as his intended last day. However, he said he would stay on for as long as it takes to hire a replacement, which could stretch into late summer or fall.

The board will be discussing the search for a new town administrator at a selectmen’s meeting later this month, Moak said.

Moak said previously that he had been waiting to make a decision until after a special election on a $1.1 million Proposition 2 1/2 override to stabilize the town finances. That vote failed on June 16, but selectmen will be trying for another override, with another Special Town Meeting and special election planned for later this summer.
