WESTFORD — A postgraduate student at Nashoba Valley Technical High School earned a bronze medal at the recent SkillsUSA State Conference in Marlboro, and another student had the prestigious honor of being selected to perform the national anthem at the closing ceremonies.
Shannon Wilkins, a Pepperell resident, received a bronze medal in Cosmetology at the event. She had earned a gold medal at the District Conference at Greater Lowell Technical High School in Tyngsboro in March to qualify for states.
Cynthia Long, a sophomore also from Pepperell, sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the closing ceremonies of the three-day event, with thousands of people from across the state in attendance.
Sixteen students from Nashoba Tech qualified to compete at the State Conference, after receiving gold, silver or bronze medals at the District Conference. Students who earned gold medals at the State Conference qualify to compete in the National Conference in June in St. Louis, Mo.
SkillsUSA is a national, nonprofit organization serving teachers and high-school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. Students compete for medals in their chosen field of study.
