TOWNSEND — Former Townsend Town Clerk Sue Funaiole has been chosen to fill the assistant town clerk position.
The position became vacant when Kathleen Spofford, who served as the assistant town clerk under Funaiole, was elected on April 28. Spofford chose Funaiole for the job out of a pool of eight applicants.
“I chose Sue because she’s the most qualified, and we work very well together. I’m looking forward to having her back in the office,” Spofford said.
Spofford said Funaiole’s years of experience as a town clerk set her apart, although another candidate was not far behind.
“There was one very qualified candidate other than Sue, but Sue was the town clerk. The other candidate has worked in a clerk’s office before, but not to the extent that Sue did,” Spofford said.
Funaiole said that she chose to apply for the assistant job rather than running for reelection as Town Clerk because she did not want to serve an entire three-year-term.
She said she is excited to get back to work.
“I am looking forward to working for Kathy as the assistant town clerk. Kathy is knowledgeable and has different and new ideas, which is good for Townsend,” Funaiole said in an email.
The job, she said, is a rewarding one because of its public service element.
“The endless variety of requests and tasks in the clerk’s office suits me. I like change, learning new things and meeting new people. The clerk’s office satisfies all of these. I look forward to helping Kathy as our town clerk in any way I can,” Funaiole said.
Funaiole was scheduled to start work on May 19. The position is for 37 hours a week.
