Pepperell is considering a new town charter. This pertains to going from a “weak” chief to a “strong” chief in the fire department. Here are some points:

The population of Groton is 9,547, Townsend is 9,198 and Pepperell is 11,940.

Assessed value is $1,781,658,030 for Groton, which includes two private schools, $719,079,760 for Townsend and $1,058,720,838 for Pepperell.

The I.S.O. rating from Brown & Brown Insurance is 5 for each town.

Salary of the chief is $108,000 in Groton, $85,000 in Townsend and $71,000 in Pepperell.

Current budget is $905,587 in Groton, $885,030 in Townsend and $549,871 in Pepperell.

A strong chief is appointed by one person, usually with little fire training. A weak chief is appointed by other engineers and all live in town.

Keep politics out of the fire department. Vote no on new charter.
