EVANSTON, Ill. — Several local students have been designated semifinalists in the 50th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program. They are among more than 1,600 black American high-school seniors to achieve the designation.

The students now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for about 800 scholarships.

The following students are local semifinalists.

Acton-Boxboro Regional High School: Emma Hardimon.

Groton School: Desiree Jones, Brittani Taylor, Yowana Wamala.
