Free dinner, live music, and good company: All are welcome to the next Groton Community Dinner at First Parish Church, located at the intersection of Route 40 and Route 119 in Groton. Labor Day: Town offices closed.
Firemen’s Muster: 11 a.m., Hollingsworth and Vose Field, West Groton. The Groton Firefighters Association invites everyone to the annual Labor Day Muster and Bar-B-Q, which will be held at the H&V Field, located at 250 Townsend Road in West Groton. Festivities begin at 11 a.m., kicking off with a parade of emergency vehicles both old and new. The parade will begin at the Senior Center and continue to H&W Field on Townsend Road. Once there, lunch will be served at noon, the menu includes our signature BBQ marinated chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs, Italian sausages, fried dough and other various sundries. Following lunch there will be many firefighting inspired games and events including a ladder climb and the flame-aim challenge. Cheer on firefighting teams as they compete to ready a fire truck for action! There will also be an exhilarating drenching twist on volleyball. Tons to do for all ages.

Steve Aylward on repealing the state gasoline tax increase: The Groton Republican Town Committee is pleased to present Republican State Committeeman Steve Aylward of Watertown who will be speaking about the Initiative Petition to repeal automatic future increases in the State’s Gasoline Tax that are tied to the rate of inflation. The talk will be held at the Groton Senior Center, West Main Street, starting about 7:30 p.m. Everybody is welcome, whatever political party (if any) you belong to. Refreshments will be served. Besides being an increased tax burden on the citizens of Massachusetts, the automatic increases tied to the rate of inflation bring up the question of taxation without representation. The talk and discussion should be lively and interesting.

Guided Trail Hike: 1 p.m. sharp. Join us on a guided hike through the woods of the Bertozzi Wildlife Management Area in West Groton, led jointly by the Groton Trails Committee and the Appalachian Mountain Club. Come see this little-known gem found along the very pretty Squannacook River. The wooded, riverside conservation area is home to abundant wildlife including foxes, deer, bears, moose, porcupines, fishers, turtles and beavers. Our hike will take about two hours and is suitable for families with children. Dogs must be well behaved and kept under owner’s control. Wear comfortable hiking shoes. From West Groton (Clover Farm Store), take Townsend Road northward, tracking your mileage carefully for exactly 2.7 miles to the conservation area, which is on the left. Park behind the sign. (42.63676N, 71.64952W). The hike will be held unless it is very stormy.

Farmers Market
The weekly Farmers Market is held at the Williams Barn at 160 Chicopee Row each Friday from 3-7 p.m. through Oct. 11 with products from the Groton area such as vegetables, herbs, flowers, plants, fruit, and berries, as well as cheese, eggs, baked goods, wine, local seeds and jam.
